A New Volume Explores the Intersections of Academic Innovation and Intellectual Property

IP Day 2025 – Excellence in Knowledge Valorisation was the title of the professional event organised by the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office (HIPO) on 3 April, hosted in the ceremonial hall of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

The event marked the launch of the volume titled Intellectual Property in Academia, which presents both international and domestic regulatory frameworks, along with practical examples that support the commercialisation of academic innovation.

The editor of the volume, Dr habil. Anikó Grad-Gyenge (Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences, BME), emphasised that the successful market deployment of developments originating in universities and research institutions requires specialised legal support. This publication is designed precisely to meet that need: it aims to assist professionals in understanding the legal and strategic aspects of academic innovation.

Dr Barna Arnold Keserű, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Law and Civil Procedural Law at Széchenyi István University, contributed to the volume as an author. During the roundtable discussion held as part of the book launch, he addressed current issues in university intellectual property management, highlighting the opportunities and challenges inherent in the fields of education and research

The publication is of particular significance, as the management of university spin-off enterprises, technology transfer, and intellectual property are key to strengthening the competitiveness of the Hungarian economy. László Bódis, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, also noted that within the framework of the Neumann János Programme, the number of patent applications has risen significantly—demonstrating the success of Hungary's innovation efforts.

This volume fills a critical gap: it not only presents the theoretical foundations but also offers practical guidance on how to transform academic innovation into economic value. Its authors are distinguished experts actively engaged in the management of intellectual assets in the academic sector.
